SEBI's CAS Circular: What Algorithmic Traders Need to Know

By ZerostocX Regulatory Team•October 5, 2026•4 min read

SEBI's recent August 3rd circular fundamentally altered how the Closing Auction Session (CAS) operates on the NSE and BSE. If your algorithms are designed to execute at the close, ignoring this circular could result in massive slippage or regulatory blocks.

What is the Closing Auction Session (CAS)?

The CAS occurs between 3:40 PM and 4:00 PM IST. It is designed to discover the closing price of securities based on supply and demand, mitigating extreme volatility that used to occur at exactly 3:30 PM.

The August 3 Updates

SEBI noted that algorithmic traders were placing massive dummy orders during the CAS to manipulate the indicative closing price, only to cancel them at the last millisecond. To combat this, the new rules state:

  • No Cancellations: Orders placed during certain minutes of the CAS can no longer be modified or cancelled.
  • Randomized Close: The exact matching second is now randomized to prevent precise algorithmic spoofing.
  • Stricter Price Bands: Tighter dummy-order rejection mechanisms are in place.

How This Affects Your Trading Algorithms

If your strategy relies on "Market on Close" (MOC) orders, or if you attempt to square off intraday positions during the CAS, your API requests may be abruptly rejected by your broker. Furthermore, if you are caught placing and cancelling large volumes during this period, brokers may suspend your API access.
